MMM was first introduced in Canada by Iris Holdup in 1951, one of Margaret Morris’ students. She introduced the method in Amherstburg, Ontario, and moved to Toronto, four years later. Over the years, more classes were being offered and new teachers were accredited in the Toronto area.
MMM Canada held its first official Board of Directors meeting in 1974, consolidating efforts of the growing number of teachers and students in Canada. In 1975, classes were introduced in Ottawa, followed by other areas across the country: Montreal (1977); Sudbury (1977); London (1980); West Coast (1985), and Stratford (2019). In 2023, MMM Canada continues to thrive as an organization, with 67 active members, including 24 registered teachers across the country.
In 1980, MMM Canada held its first Canadian Summer Workshop at Trent University, in order to allow the growing number of students (children; adults) and teachers connect and train in Canada, share their love of dance. (Note: The Canadian Summer Workshop was initially inspired by the International Summer School, held in the United Kingdom). The Summer Workshop continues to be offered annually, along with other regional events held throughout the year.
